Lying on my bed, I stare up at the ceiling in my bare room, wide awake. The wait for lights-out takes longer than normal. It’s moments like this that I wish I could get my hands on a watch.

The thought draws me to Lily and the lighter I didn’t ask her for. What would have been the point? As far as I see it, O’Reilly has won. He showed me his full hand when I was in my session with Heather, and it left me on the floor with a cut across my hand.

The near waterproof bandage remains tight on my skin, reminding me that O’Reilly has complete control of my life. There are only two ways I can free myself of that monster, and they are both impossible. I need to either escape this damn hospital, or go on the offensive and find a way to stop him, permanently. The latter is more of a fantasy than anything else.

The single, dusty light bulb in my room clicks off without warning, bathing me in darkness for a moment until my eyes adjust to the dim lighting out in the corridor. There was a time when a nurse would give me a few minutes’ notice about the process so it wouldn’t be so jarring, but lately the hospital seems to be cutting corners. O’Reilly must love it.

With fewer eyes around to scrutinize and consider his actions, O’Reilly is free to push the boundaries. He can do things like take control of a colleague’s laptop just to flex his muscles and remind someone how much power he has in this hellhole. What am I supposed to do to fight such arrogance?

I roll to my side, away from the door, and try to get comfortable. The bandage on my hand itches. It feels more and more foreign by the second, so I dig my nails into it and rip the damn thing off.

I let the spent bandage fall to the floor and welcome the fresh air over my cut. It’s freeing for a moment, until the pain of removing the dressing kicks in. A hiss of breath draws in through my clenched teeth as I grab hold of my hand for support, making sure not to touch the wound.

In the dark, I can barely make out the cut, but I know it’s there, staring at me, reminding me like a piece of string tied around a finger that my existence is being monitored. O’Reilly probably has cameras hidden in this room. At least one. And why wouldn’t he? I’m the biggest threat to his life.

If I decide O’Reilly’s harassment is too much to handle, I might go running to the nearest nurse and tell them everything. Sure, they might not believe me, but there could be enough questions raised for an investigation to take place.

Maybe he’s crushing me down, grinding me into a pulp, to snap my resolve in two. I must admit, it’s working. The thought of asking Lily to lend me her lighter to bring Kay out sounds like the last thing I want to do anymore.
